Learning For Life & Work

Why Study LLW?

Learning for Life and Work is a compulsory area of learning at Key Stage 3. At Lurgan Junior High School we learn about Personal Development in Year 8, Employability in Year 9 and Local and Global Citizenship in Year 10.

Learning for Life and Work aims to bring closer links between the curriculum and the knowledge skills and capabilities that are necessary for life and work. It explicitly addresses the three main objectives of the curriculum: to develop young people as individuals, as contributors to the economy and the environment.

In Local and Globel Citizenship, our Year 10 pupils have opportunities to explore a range of topics through local, national and European and global contexts:

  • Diversity and Inclusion;

  • Human Rights and Social Responsibility;

  • Equality and Social Justice;

  • Democracy and Active Participation.

This subject strand helps pupils learn how to participate positively in society and influence democratic processes. It also helps them to make informed and responsible decisions as local and global citizens throughout their lives. Two of our former pupils have gone on to be elected as Members of the Youth Parliament and have travelled to Westminster to participate in events.

In the summer term of Year 10, all pupils participate in the CCEA’s Community of Lifesavers. This programme consists of six core modules across a range of emergency medical themes, including cardiac arrest and using CPR and AED.
