Examinations & Assessments

At Lurgan Junior High School, pupils are grouped into broad ability bands based on standardised tests taken in June of their P7 year, along with data from primary schools.  These bands help in forming class placements and setting academic targets.

The school reviews each pupil's progress annually to ensure appropriate placement.  Various assessment methods, including homework, class tests, end-of-term assessments, and Christmas examinations, are used throughout the year to evaluate pupils’ performance.  This structured approach aims to maximise each pupil's potential and reward their successes.

Reports are issued bi-annually. Assessment combines the continuous monitoring and checking of pupils’ progress throughout the year with a formal examination in the Summer Term. Reports are published for parents to view on the SIMS Parent App.

Regression analysis is carried out for all pupils following the Christmas and Summer examinations.  Regression analysis is a comparison of pupil achievement in their exams compared to their ability shown through their CAT4 data.  Through this detailed data analysis, pupils can be identified as overachieving, working at their predicted level or underachieving according to their potential from the CAT4 data.  Pupils identified as overachieving will be presented with a certificate to celebrate success while pupils identified as underachieving will have inventions in place to support them reaching their potential.

Parents will have the opportunity to discuss their child’s progress through meetings with subject teachers early in the Spring Term via School Cloud online platform. Parents and Guardians book an appointment online with those teachers that they wish to speak to.
